My kids have brought home some really neat projects that have been fired in our school's kiln. They made jars by rolling clay into long "snakes" and winding them around and around, building the jar as high as they wanted. They made dishes by flattening clay out, then pressing a leaf into the top to leave its impression. They were very pretty when they were painted in fall colors and glazed. They also made Jack-o-lanterns that weren't thrown. I think they hollowed out the center of a ball of clay, much as they would a real Jack-o-lantern.
If you're able, it might help to practice with each project before the kids do it. They'll have an easier time of it if they know what they're working towards.

Our school has a Cress Electric Kiln, looking for some ideas of craft/ projects (that don't need to be thrown, ie. put on a spinning wheel- think 'Demi Moore and Ghost') for an afterschool enrichment class.
I'm trying to lower expertice level and find some elementary appropriate projects
