September is Library Card Sign-up Month

OK, this is right up my alley! If you would like to have a children's librarian come out and talk to the kids, make sure you start planning it now. They get booked early.

As far as library card registrations, most libraries will just accept the application form and mail the library card. The children cannot (in most cases) receive it at the time that the application is received.

The librarians have to check their databases to make sure that they don't already have a card. You might want to note that if they already have a card, instead of filling out another form, they can either check a box that says that their child already has a card or they can send in a photocopy of the card.

This will help the librarians and save soooooo much work. You would not believe how many duplicate registrations we get.

Good luck, it can be a lot of fun!

Our district has a contract with the local library to have the Bookmobile come out every 2 weeks. At the beginning of the year a letter is sent home for the parents to fill out to get a library card. I had not heard of a parent who didn't sign it!

Also, September 7th is International Literacy Day. I was thinking of seeing if the children's librarian from our local library would come to our school on the 7th and read to some of the classes and talk about the library. And maybe have a library card drive with the classroom that has the highest percentage of new library card holders winning a prize.

Any thoughts from you more experienced PTO/A gurus? :D
