Reading Night Ideas

19 years 4 days ago #112855 by Holly Eighmy
I know we've posted some already, but I thought I'd start it's own thread. Here's information about our Gordy's Reading Odyssey we do. I can mail a copy of the actual paper if anyone would like. Just email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We are also incorporating a Read & Feed for our family reading night in addition to the reading odyssey and story telling night.

We have Nevada Reading Week Feb. 27-March 3, 2006. Our school also adds their Gordy's Reading Odyssey that starts the Wed. of the week before. We print up our mascot Gordy, the dragon, on red (school colors) cardstock. Gordy has a star on his head, paw, 3 on the middle of his tail and one on the end of his tail. Then there are places on his leg and belly with Mon.-Fri. for the parents to sign off. Here is what's printed on the back...

6th annual Gordy Reading Odyssey

Welcome to this year's Gordy Reading Odyssey. We hope this year will be even more successful and fun than years past!! The Odyssey is simple. Each student must obtain stickers to put on Gordy for different achievements. The more parts of Gordy you fill in will determine the discount amount you receive towards the purchase of a book at the Book Fair. (held in conjuction with this)

To obtain stickers (or initials) for Gordy, you must:
1. For a sticker for Gordy's tail, tell Mr. Holmes (principal) it is Nevada Reading Week.

2. For a sticker on Gordy's wing, you must give Mr. Steve (head custodian) a clipping of a cartoon with your name and room #/or teacher's name on it.

3. To get a sticker for the middle of Gordy's tail, attend Family Reading Night on Thursday night, Feb. 24, at our school from 6:30-7:30 pm.

4. For a sticker on Gordy's head, you mut read a poem or nursery rhyme to a PTA member at Family Reading Night. Because of overwhelming "Roses are Red..." poems, they will not count. We will expect longer and more words from the 4th & 5th graders--We like poems that you write. A PTA member will be wearing a Dr. Suess Hat.

5. Have a Henderson District Library card and have the librarian sign off on the bottom of Gordy's tail.

6. Check out a book from Gibson Library and have the librarian sign Gordy's paw.

7. Go without T.V. for one hour for at least 4 nights, between 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm. Your parent must sign off a date on Gordy's right leg for each night.

8. Read, or be read to, for 1/2 hour for at least 4 nights. Your parent must sign off a date on Gordy's stomach for each night.
(for numbers 7 & 8 above you must do at least 4 nights to receive credit)

On Wednesday morning, March 2, a PTA member will pick up the completed Gordys to count the pieces. Students who obtain more then half of the pieces will be awarded a gift certificate for the Scholastic Book Fair this month, to be used March 3 & 4.

Good luck on your quest.

We have great participation with this. We also have dress up days during Nevada Reading Week like crazy sock/shoe day, silly hat day, Cool day (sunglasses & cool attire), Sweats day, Readable shirt day.

I hope this helps out some of you!
