Our charter school is located in one of the largest school districts in Colorado yet it amazes me how the money is still split so that the "district" schools recieve more than the charter schools. At a recent board mtg forour school, we were informed that the school district would to figure out how to get back the students (or "product" as refered to as) since the charter schools are educating (very well I may add) 11% of their desired "product". Thwy wouldlike 4% back. The parents were good enough to joke the district will come after the larger families first and the Principal joked to me "we will miss you!" (I have five, three are in school).

Is this an issue the "Govenatior" is looking at? Thinking he has children in school, it would be of consern...

you know maybe busing the kids to the inner city could prove interesting.....

Beverly Hills High School is the only high school in the Beverly Hills Unified School District. It is a public school district governed by an elected Board of Education. Accountability? Hmmm.... we do have an Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and a Superintendent and I know they are accountable to the Board. We have department chairpersons who are responsible to the principals. But no, I don't think the system has a parent committee on educational standards. What is interesting is that parents (like me) get caught up in the hype (bands, football teams, etc.) and one does not ask the question- how does my child's school compare to other schools? Should I believe everything that the principal or the newsletter says? Is there more to the story? I was horrified when I saw how schools in Beverly Hills (the most funded schgol district in California) compared to other districts that receive substantially less money. There are even inner city schools outperforming students at my child's school? What is with that? I suggested at a meeting once that perhaps we should bus kids from Beverly Hills to the inner city since they are doing better academically in some subjects. I got booooood big time!

Love the website and have been thinking about this issue. Is there an accountablity committee of sorts with your school that should be reviewing this information on a regular basis. I was a member of the committee at our charter school for two years and learned so much! We reviewed test scores, disapline issues, the school budget (to a degree)...like I said interesting. On this committee was a parent rep from Elem, Middle, High (we are K-12); the dean; principal; testing cordnator; a few teachers from each "school" and a student council rep.

Start with the Department of Education for Arizona. Under new rules of No Child Left Behind there are more records available to parents. In fact, in California, there are almost too many datafiles to go through. BUT, using the datafiles is tricky. You may have to use Microsoft ACCESS- not easy! You can also try the Department of Education in Washington, DC. Try internet searches "Arizona education test results" things like that. Believe me, the administrators in Beverly Hills turned purple when they knew I had the results and were sharing them with parents. It's the last thing they want you to know about. GOOD LUCK!
