Children in Need

We have a wonderful neighborhood that is located near our school. The homeowners' association there adopts us each holiday season. Although that particular neighborhood is "upscale", the majority of the students in our school are from less wealthy families. We let the homeowners' association know which families need help and put them in touch, then they work together directly. I don't know whether this is an option for you, but it's one more idea.

Gosh, I just really want to buy that child some shoes myself . . . Too often, we don't appreciate our good fortune, do we? Perhaps this is the time of year when we should give that some thought.

I like the idea of the silent partner program. Can you give some additional details about it? From whom do you get the donations? How are the receiving families approached? This can be a sensitive situation at times.

We have a silent partner program in our elementary school. The guidance counselor or teacher tells us what they need. We take donations of coats, hats, gloves, snowpants, boots, etc. We place this program in our budget. I think this year we have $200 in there. If it isn't in our closet, then the teacher associate that runs the program will run over to Wal-mart and buy the appropriate size.

P.S. Hope this helps. It is about so much more than a pair of bloody shoes, it is about the child's self-esteem!! ;)

How do you make that determination about whose needs are met? Do you have a committee?

In that case a teacher knew the family situation and had spoken with his grandparents to know Dad was gone and Mom was doing her best but needed some help. No insurance and Medicaid wasn't enough help. We were happy we could help.

We also don't see to many big requests like this. Most are for uniforms which is my "ministry" if you will (I have a degree in Merchandising ;) ).

As far as committee, we have a great parent base and the devoted ones that attend had no problem with this. Now the key thing to mention, we are not incorporated or "on our own". A big difference but for us a blessing since we don't have to really worry about so much.

I don't take that the wrong way at all. I feel the same way. I'm guess I'm just needing someone to support my feelings on the matter. We have re-established our goals and have changed some things. I am writing a memo to the principal to let him know our views on the matter and that we have our budgeted already allocated. Thanks for you reply, it is most helpful.
