Don't forget your high school students! Many need or want community service on their college resumees and what more fun can you have than helping a seven year old with their math!

We are a charter school in North Denver, K-12 and 1300 students( I guess enrollment incresed!). We ran into the same issue last year. Honestly it seems to hit every other year! Last year was crazy! We did see more Grandpas come it to help and they had a great time!

One way I have learned to look at talking about what needs to be do are things they can do for the teachers at home or something that only takes an hour or two of their day. I find so many assume I spend all day volunteering. No, many times I grab what I need (I cut out tons of little things for kindergarten teachers etc.) and go or do most of the needed communications for the board. Are there ways for "moms" to help with out being at school all day?

We just had grandparents week here and our parent liason had made vounteer positions available to them. She says she has already had several calls from grandparents wanting to volunteer.

I'm president of the PTO at an 850-student elementary school (k - 6) in Southern California. We are having a terrible time finding volunteers this year. We have an art program taught by parent volunteers and no one is signing up. We have a first-grade classroom without a room parent (this used to unheard-of at our school - the lower grades always had too MANY parent volunteers). Several teachers have commented this is the worst year for volunteers they have ever seen in their careers.

I think it is because housing prices in our area have skyrocketed and now the majority of kids have both parents working. I know this will blow away some of you from other parts of the country, but the median home price in our zip code is over $700,000 and the median condo prices is $440,000. And the majority of these homes are nice, but nothing special. I'm just trying to give you some background on what we are dealing with.

This is new for our area - traditionally we had lots of stay-at-home moms and dads to help out. What do you do when the majority of your parents work and feel they can't volunteer? How do you motivate them?

I'm really frustrated. We have had a great pledge drive and they seem to give lots of money - just not a lot of time to the school. Any ideas are appreciated.
