just as with luv we have many grandparents who volunteer at or school. But alas our bylaws also state that you must be a parent/ gaurdian or faculaty member to be a board member or a voting member. We just may need to revistit this section and revise it :)Our grandparents are a wealth of information and ideas and i never thought twice about them not having voting rights that is just wrong.

we have a few grandparents at our school who are very involved. They have the time and desire so why not use them.

With a lot of families having two working parents and grandparents having nothing but time, I see nothing wrong with using grandparents as you would any other parent who volunteers. A set of hands is a set of hands!

Our by-laws state that any familiy member, staff of the school district OR anyone living withing the boudaries of the school can be a member of the PTO.

Who ever wrote that artile must not have any kids, or be involved themselves. We have several grandparents and I don't know what we'd do without them.

We have many grandparents(and aunts, uncles, older siblings, neighbors and family friends) who give their time in the classroom and at school events. Just a couple of weeks ago another parent and I were talking about volunteers and relaized that our by-laws prohibit anyone but parents, guardians, and staff of the school from being voting members of our PTO and serving on the board. We are planning to rewrite that section of our by-laws(and present for a vote at the first meeting next year) to extend membership and election to the board to any member of our community who gives at least one hour of their time monthly in volunteering at our school. With so many two income families and single parents, many extended family members are stepping into help(along with friends and neighbors). There are also people in the community who want to lend a hand in the schools. We have always welcomed these people with open arms when coming to volunteer, why shouldn't we extend that welcome to direct involvement in our organization? New ideas, a fresh perspective, and more people to share the load-sounds good to me!!

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

this makes me really sad. i don't know what we would do with out grandparents at our school. they go on field trips as chaperons, come eat lunch with kids who have no living grandparents, read in our library, mentor and what ever else needs to be done. i'm sorry for the school that is really missing out!!

Anyone that would ban grandparents/elderly from volunteering at school's has no buisness being in the position/job they are in. That is absolutely horrible to do to everyone involved.
