guidlines to attend middle school dances

I agree with you. Attending a dance is a privilege, and not a right. I believe our policy is similar to tam's when it comes to having to be present at school the day of the dance, and the detentions, as it should be.

I too am shocked by the principal's and staffs' reasoning on this subject. Their leadership skills are inaffectual at best. It sounds as though they're afraid of taking on the parents whose children wouldn't be able to attend. It seems as though the parents who feel their child can do no wrong, and should never be disciplined always have the loudest and most confrontational voices, and the most obnoxious children! In this case it's up to the principal and staff to do what the parents should be doing. Other children are involved here in matters concerning safety.

Wow! What a dance that must have been. I am the President of our Middle School PTSO. Our guidelines are that first the child must be in school on the day of the dance. If the child is on In School Detention or has after school dentention during that week of the dance, they are not permitted to attend.

Attire is written out in black and white before the dance. Anyone showing up with improper attire will be turned away at the door.

I am very surprised of the teacher and the principal's behavior. They are there to set an example. The students involved in the fight at your last dance would not be permitted to attend any dances for the rest of the school year.

Each parent must drop their child off and pick them up at the dance on time and sign them out. This way, we know that every child has been safely picked up. Arrangements that other parents will be bringing other students with them, then a note has to be handed to the principal's office at least 2 days prior so a list can be drawn up as to who is bringing who and who is picking up who.

I hope this may help you a little.

Good Luck!

our school is not any agreement as to what the criteria is for a student to attend an after school dance in middle school. The menu ranges from absolutely no infractions to its okay to have three after school detentions and 1 suspension per quarter. This is inconsistent thinking between teachers and students. Our school currently does not have ANY guidlines. I feel that attending a school dance is a privilage but the students that attended our Site Council mtg. feel that they should get to go to the dance because they are students with no other criteria. DId I mention that the reason this issue has come up is because at the last dance we had a serios fight break out and a teacher who volunteered to stay after school to chaparone the dance shoved and also the principal was cursed up and down by a student when being questioned about their behavior ath the dance. I would apprecaite any thoughts that you all may have on what the guidlines should be or if your school currently has ones in place
Thanks
