Lundybluei, you mentioned a monthly volunteer award. How do you do this and what kinds of awards do you grant?

At our school we have the Volunteer Sign In Sheet located in the office. It is the offices record of who is in the school and what class they are in as well as a way to keep track of volunteer hours. In NH we keep track of volunteer hours for a BLUE RIBBION AWARD. We send home a sheet at the start of every year for those parents that make call, bake, correct, or cut things out. We ask that the sheet be return in May. By keeping the sign in sheet in the office it allow every volunteer to be greeted and welcomed by the office staff. We also keep track of volunteer hours for our monthly volunteer award.

We give each individual volunteer a sheet to keep up with their hours on. The sheet is made on Excel and I think we put our school logo on it. This is easier than looking it up in the sign in sheet. It is important for us, I am not sure about other states, but the number of volunteer hours helps us with grants. We turn our time in at the end of the year to Title I.

WHEN PARENTS COME IN THE SCHOOL TO VOLUNTEER, WE HAVE A SMALL TABLE IN THE LOBBY WITH A BINDER, CONTAINING THE VOLUNTEER HOUR LOG AND A PEN. EACH PARENT IS TO WRITE THE DATE AND THE HOURS THEY VOLUNTEERED. THIS IS IN ADDITION TO SIGNING INTO THE OFFICE FOR SECURITY REASONS. IF A PARENT, GRANDPARENT OR ANY VOLUNTEER WORKS AT HOME, CUTTING OUT SHAPES, GRADING PAPERS,ETC...THEY NEED TO MAKE SURE THEY RECORD THOSE HOURS IN THE BOOK THE NEXT TIME THEY COME TO SCHOOL SO THEY CAN RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THEIR MUCH APPRECIATED HOURS. THAT'S ABOUT IT.

Actually we've never kept a log. Do you include "at home hours" or just when parent is helping in classroom. How do you get parents to fill out log? We have a "visitor sign in" sheet at the school which is where we sign in if helping in classroom. But not all visitor are volunteers. Please advise. I would also be interested in an example of a log. Thanks folks!
