How do we know if we need to file taxes??? The person who used to handle ALL of the PTO is no longer at our school and didn't leave us with any advice???
If you are not a 501c3 yet, you can take a deep breath and relax. If your PTO were registered, it would be obligated to complete form 990 each year. But, since the IRS is not officially aware of your organization, you do not need to file 990...yet.

Thank you so much for responding quickly. To answer your questions, No, we are not 501(c)3, we have not been contacted by the IRS (but we don't want to be either). We would need to file form 990, I think. For confirmation, What is the monetary amount for filing taxes? I am panicked because the school year is ending, I am moving away,and I don't want to leave behind any loose strings.
You sound panicked...maybe we can help you right here through this discussion forum to at least alleviate some of your concern.
Can you give us a little background:
* Is your PTO a 501c3 non-profit charity already?
* Are you worried about the annual return for 501c3 organizations, Form 990?
* What tells you that your PTO is in arrears? Have you received any communication from the IRS?
* Is your tax id number the same as the school's?
Depending on your situation, you might be able to resolve any issues directly with the IRS's help. I have found the representatives very helpful, and it's alot easier to get through to the non-profit reps than to the general tax support reps.
I don't remember when or on which board, but someone mentioned going to the local college and seeing if there wasn't someone there, a professor maybe, who would be willing to help out. You could also call another school's PTO pres/treasurer and see who they use. You really don't need someone who specializes in nonprofits, but it does help.
I NEED TO FILE TAXES FOR OUR PTO, BUT HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND AN ACCOUNTANT WHO SPECIALIZES IN PTO ORGANIZATIONS. WE DIDN'T FILE IN THE YEARS PAST AS FAR AS I CAN TELL. MY TREASURER WAS SUPPOSE TO HANDLE THIS, BUT LEFT THE PTO AND SCHOOL, NOW I'M LEFT HOLDING THE BAG AND NEED TO GET THIS RESOLVED BEFORE THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. SO IF ANYONE WHO KNOWS OF AN ACCOUNTANT IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR SUGGESTIONS.
