PTO funds to cover school budget cuts?

Here is something that I got from another discussion board that I also belong to:

www.wrightslaw.com/health/open.fed.funds.htm#states

I hope this works. It shows how much money each states returns back to the federal government that is not used for schools. "money that can be spent on our children!

My opinion is that it is not right for a district not to give back funds if it becomes available, and the reason for not doing so is because the PTO has covered these costs

The bottom line is that when your legislators look at the budgets, they don't see where the money came from, they just see the bottom line. It's up to them to decide how much money each school district gets out of the state and federal budgets. If it were up to the superintendents, they would get a whole lot more. And the big boys at the capitol don't see the PTAs/PTOs picking up the slack.

I do have a problem with paying for someone's salary. How does one decide who to keep and who not to keep? I wish that building principals and higher ups would not permit that to happen.

I don't know how the rest of you do it, but we donate the money to the school and they do the hiring and then pay as from the school. It's the only way we could do it.

It's a major dilemma. If we do help, we might be hurting and if we don't help, we might be hurting.
Sad....

If I'm reading Critter's post correctly, the 500 "things" she's referring to is the 500 sheets of paper in one ream. Kind of clever way to get folks to donate a ream; not a magical "500 different things you can do" document.

It think we are all struggling with the issue of how much support and where. I know that I had wanted to offset the costs of our art and media teachers going to half time when I was elected. I believe it was luck that I read the PTO Today article last year that talked about PTO not masking school needs by providing funds. It completely shifted my outlook.

I highly encourage you to read it.

We are a small private school and use most of our funds to help the school.

If it is a paper issue, Office Depot will give you a ream of paper for every inkjet you give them. We do ink cartridges for $$ but the inkjets that are not accepted are taken to Office Depot and exchanged for paper for the school. We also have parents to donate paper to the school, whether they work for a printer, know a paper company, get it donated from their offices, old company letterhead, etc. You'd be surprised what kind paper your child's homework is on! We are very thrifty!
