I am also interested in getting more information on PTSO's. We have several students, one of whom is my 11 year old daughter that have a lot to say about what is going on in our school. How can we change from PTO to PTSO?

Thanks for replying...yes we are a middle school and we are trying to have more interaction between the parent group, the students and the student council. We would like to see more communication and interaction on different school projections. Are there any other PTSO's out there? How do your by-laws read about studenta and voting?

I will have to assume you are not an elementary school.

Reorganization should depend on how you want to involve the students. Will the student reps be voting members of the board? Remember they are minors, so become familar with contract law concerning minors. If they are not voting members (which is typical) then what will their role be besides providing input for dances.

Here is an idea instead of reorganizing which can have its own set of problems if you are already a 501(c)(3) - ammend your current by laws to include non voting representation for the purpose of bringing student interests and issues to the board. It becomes in fact a PTSO without having to go through the hassle of reorg and retains the name of PTO. Just a thought.

We are redoing our bylaws and are thinking of going from a PTO to a PTSO. What are the pros and cons? Principal is worried that kids would come to meetings and vote monies for dances...etc. Should students be allowed on board? Any info would be helpful. thanks
