I would also add that you might want to encourage your PTO to change the rules regarding how spending decisions are made. Our officers have $100 max authority to approve spending decisions outside our budget. Any bigger non-budgeted expense must be approved by a quorum (15) of members at a monthly meeting. This doesn't necessarily solve your specific issue with the bowling league, but your point that the OFFICERS decide how to spend general fund money caught my attention.

My opinion is that the PTO officers who approved funding this league should have worked this out before they agreed to start it, and they are in a really tough spot now if that wasn't spelled out.

The best analogy I can come up with is that there is a PTA in our area who sponsors a golf tournament. The person who runs it for them insisted that profits made from the tournament be dedicated to the building and grounds fund of the PTA, and that condition had to be met for him to run (and keep running) the tournament. Some people don't like it, because this is a very large amount of money being dedicated to building and grounds, but that's the way it is. If the PTA tried to change that condition, this person (who has been very successful with this fundraiser--big $$ profit) would not run the tournament, plain and simple.

My suggestion would be this. At least for this year, can your bowling group come up with a list of items they might like to help with? Then present them to the PTO board, if for no other reason, then to prevent a duplication of efforts. But another reason is that you really shouldn't have a group of people out there using the PTO name with the possibility of that group not having goals that mesh with the PTO's bylaws or purposes. The bowling group should also have a realistic idea of how much in terms of net dollars they think they will contribute, so they don't grossly over (or under) promise.

As a longer term solution, maybe the two groups could come to agreement on a long term general purpose for the bowling league to exist. For example, maybe there's a shortage of sports equipment at the school--maybe you could come to an agreement that whatever net profits come from the league get put towards sports equipment, since bowling is a sport.

I hate double edge swords! If the group has already decided what they want to do there is really nosense in trying to change their minds BUT look at what is needed at the school that the PTO wasn't planning on doing or can't. Keep it in the PTO name of course.

Remeber when we were kids and we raised a few bucks on our own by helping a neighbor etc....how proud we were of that money WE earned....yeah, I'm thinking THAT is the feeling your bowling buddies will be having and Mom and Dad didn't spend our money, WE DID! [img]smile.gif[/img] years later it's the same concept.....

We have started a bowling league using the PTO name to help support our school. The members of the bwlng league want to have full say as to how this money is disbursed. The problem being is if the $ goes into the PTO general fund then the officers are the ones to vote on the $'s use. Many parents feel this is unfair since it is their money that has been paid to the league. No involvement has been made from any of the PTO officers other than to say yes we could run the league. What am I, the president of the bowling league, to do about this conflict. The league voted unanimously to keep their profits seperate from the general fund, so that they could decide how the $ would be best spent for the school.
