while i agree that no check should be written without the pres, approval i would like to comment further. Every check which I wrote was according to our allocations further run past the pres. example if a check needed wrote to pay for room parents parties i always ran this past hte pres beforehand even though it was allocated. I still however was personally criticized and attacked for wastefully spending pto funds. every check that i wrote was logged with receipt and breakdown of funds. so of course this accusation from one of our own board members was totally absurd it did break apart our grouip. no good will ever come if the group doesn't act as one and in the interest of the children.

I agree with TheMetzymom, get your hands on those minutes and see what is "official". If this proves that you did indeed vote on $400 and the treasurer spent $1,000 then you need to put it to a vote at the next meeting to see if the body will ratify the Treasurer's actions. If they do, then the Treasurer get's off and all is peachy, if they do not ratify it.... then the Treasurer must pay back the money that was overspent. If the President is involved in this too then he/she is equally liable for that amount with the Treasurer. Curl up with a good book tonight called "Roberts Rules of Order" and find proof of the vote in writing and you have all the ammo you need. Happy hunting.

Were there Minutes kept at the meeting? From the meeting? Doesn't everyone get a copy of the minutes? I'm pretty sure that between the prez, the teacher and the treasurer, that someone knew how much was approved. And the treasurer shouldn't write any checks without prez approval, and the teacher knew better than to accept the check. If there were minutes kept, get the money back. If there were no minutes kept, consider it Stupid Tax, Paid In Full.

At the last meeting of last year, we (PTO board & me & my friend in attendance)had a requisition from a teacher asking for $1200.00 for paper workbooks. Normally students shared them & had no problem, but she wanted one for each student. I thought it was pricey so I suggested $400.00 & to table it until the fall to see what else we could do. It passed unamiously. Well, I got the ledger recently & saw that a check was cut for $1000.00 for the teacher. I have called the treasurer & she has not returned my calls. I saw her at Open House but thought not to ask then since I was meeting new parents & talking up PTO. The teacher told one of the Co-Reps that she had a question about the money. I don't know if that means she didn't get it or what. I was not able to get to the teacher before she left. I did get to ask the former Pres. why the check was cut for more than we voted. She didn't know & couldn't remember what amount we voted on. She doesn't have the minutes. So, Monday, I have to talk to the teacher, try to find the original requisition that had the amount we voted on & talk to the treasurer, as well as the principal. I'm wiggin' out over here about this. Thoughts...?
