The PTO Board that won't go away?

Busy mom,

Our by-laws do not state how election of officers is held. We have a vote though every May through prior practice. We nominate in April.

Another women's group that I belong to, we have a selection committee. We pick out the committee among our neighbors, who then call whom they would feel would be the best for the position. It is almost always that the Vice-president becomes the President, but if the Vice-President declines the position then we make a decision who to ask.

Is there a copy of your by-laws at every meeting? If so i'd ask to see a copy of them.

Good luck,

Renee

Just for starters, does your PTO have bylaws? I know this might be a thorny question, but if they do, there, no doubt, is some policy on board terms, etc.

Since it may not be possible for you to even get bylaws, if the powers that be don't acknowledge them, it might be something that could be suggested at a meeting - "Gee, it would be helpful for us to have bylaws. I was checking PTOToday's website, and found some really helpful info on setting them up. Can we appoint a committee to do this?"

Just a start on your problem. I will think some more!

I attend a school in which the Current Board, especially the President, are controlled by the principal. In the 3 going on 4 years my children have attended this school, there have never been elections for any positions. The Board just appoints people to positions, keeping them within a click. Our current President is beginning her 3rd term and there really needs to be a change. I am wanting to suggest next semester that elections be held for all Board positions in order to get some new blood in. Any suggestions?
