Do you literally mean PTA - or just a parent group?

A PTA (Parent Teacher Association) unit is an official part of that national (and state) levels of the organization. The national website is www.pta.org and the Texas site is www.txpta.org/ When joining the PTA, part of your dues go to support these othe levels of the organizations. In return you get a lot of information, structure, access to training, etc. But, you must do things by their rules.

A PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) - or most similar other acronymns - also exist to support a school, but it's not affiliated with any formal group. It has more independance, but also more respnsibility as its leaders must create their own rules, procedures, controls, etc.

This Forum includes a mixture of organizations. You should probably read the article "PTO vs PTA" ( www.ptotoday.com/0800ptopta2.html ) first unless you already understand that part.

If you decide you really do want to be a PTA, then contact your state office and they will assist you. This group will also be helpful.

If what you meant was that you wanted to create an independent parent group, like a PTO, then read through some of the postings in this section asking similar advice, and we'll all be around to help as you decide what you need.

Good luck!
