Our group encompasses to schools. Each school has a VP representing the school, and our by-laws state that the VP must have a child in that school. All other board positions are open to anyone with a child in either elementary school. Why would someone who did't have a child in the schoool WANT to be on the board?

You can state in your bylaws that in order to be elected to the postion of an Officer the person must have been a card/vote holding member of your organization for a minimum of 1 year. But be careful, if you are an organization like many who have to scramble to get people willing to take positions on the Exec Committee this could hurt you to recruit people who would be willing to come in "new" and get the training requird. In my state PTA we can amend our bylaws up to 3 times a year only after membership approves the amendment and then we need to wait for State approval before we can start it.
In my PTA any member regardless if they have a child in the school or not may become an officer. I was actually one of those parents who joined the PTA 2 years before my child was in the school and became an Officer the 2 yr of me joining. i started as rec sec, moved to 2nd vp and now am Pres. (I love every minute of it) I look forward to getting involved in the State level.

As I understand it, anyone that holds a membership in your PTA can run for an officer position.

OK........ Question... How many of you have officers that are NOT on School Staff OR a parent/guardian of a student? Do any of you have this in your By-Laws that an officer has to be one or the other? In other words that a person without a child at the school cannot be an officer. If so, how have you worded this --- and are there any suggestions as to how to change by-laws to state this. I know, very carefully! Advice needed -- ASAP!!!
