curbing negativity at meetings

There seem to be "evil" ones all over the place but maybe they lack a certain amount of perspective that you can bring in to play at your meetings. Basically everything we're doing is for the betterment of the children's experience with school. Maybe you can take a leaf out of a management book and say "Don't come to me with problems, come to me with solutions" and that your meetings are not a forum for griping.

It sounds like you care a great deal about doing a good job and I congratulate you for that. Good luck with the negative people-they'll always be with us but we can rise above them...

Hi guys, thanks so much for all your good wishes and support. The fallout from last night continues, actually it's kind of funny when you think about it. I mean, it's a PTA and it's just not as important as 2 people are trying to make it. I look at my job as an RN and taking care of sick babies, some of who die. No-one is going to die over the PTA, they don't have to like me, but is it really more important to them then their kids? Sadly, I think it is. I got involved because I want my child to know that I care about her education. I don't want the PTA to get turned into a circus. Thankfully, I have a lot of great people who support me (not to mention all of you! :> )) And really only 2-3 people who are angry with me and are trying to find things to complain about, now they are going to the state PTa to complain about how all kinds of rules were broken at our meeting. (it was ugly, let me tell ya...... :> )) That should be interesting, to say the least. Anyone have any experiences with that? Thanks again for all your support, sorry this is so long. :> ) Maggie

Hey Maggie!! I found a gavel on the optimiststuff.com site I did a search and found a gavel. They want $20.45 for a walnut gavel and it does have their logo on it but it's not really noticeable and maybe bring some optimisim to your group.
Okay, I married a member who is now the LT Gov on the club's state level what can I say!!

Would your neighbor be willing to come to Denver?? Mine all think I'm crazy for being as involved in the school as I am!

Okay, my "evil one" looks like Janet Reno and tends to use that to her advantage! Granted I'm no slouch myself and have stood up to her before ( told her to SHUT UP in a school board meeting) but I was 8 months pregnant and just couldn't take it anymore!!!
My meeting is Monday....I really hope mine isn't as bad but it's already looking that way. The school wants to charge me for copies- I'm working on it.
Maggie, I'm looking for the catalog!

hi everyone, well the pta meeting was a horror show. :> ) (not all of it) we actually had 50+ people show up, I thought I was going to have a stroke. Lots of new people. However, we (the board) were blindsided by ms. negativity. She got up and turned her back to us and launched into this huge thing about protecting the 5th grade party forever and wrote up a policy (she made copies and handed it out) The 5th grade is a line item in the budget already, they are always going to have a party. The VP and I were just looking at each other like... what is this about. My neighbour (I love her now) stood up and told evil person that she was blindsiding the board and no-one else had wanted to do this job, etc. and what she was doing was wrong. (the look on evil person's face was priceless!) She was TICKED. she came up to me afterwards and told me she didn't appreciate the comment and she could have done this behind everyone's back.... I pretty much looked at her and said, Um, you did. it was UGLY! and of course my ideal 1 hr meeting lasted 2 hrs. (because evil one wouldn't give up)
So, where do I get a gavel? She isn't going to pull that again. (Boy do I have a lot to say at back to school night!!!!!!) I'm going to bed now, I just can't get over what she did tonight! maggie
