I do not understand why the principal would do that. First and foremost is the money that you would be raising directly benefit the students? We are a school where 85% recieve free or reduced lunches and our principal only question when we do fundraiser is does this benefit the students. The suggestion that I have for you is to list the ways that you would spend the money earned to benefit the students. Show how by holding a charity fundraiser (good in principal but bad in practice) would interfere with the activities that you have planned and how by losing this money how much you have to cut back. But also suggest a can food drive or a penny drive to help that charity. This could run for two weeks and still teach the kids about giving back. We have 2 charity things this year, a canned food drive as the cost of admission for a family fun night, and a penny drive for the local library. May I also mention that in our annually budget that we account for less than $200.00 for activities that do not directly benefit the students.

Our school is located in an area with historically limited incomes (51% of student body receives free/reduced lunch), and of course with the difficult economy our fundraising efforts just aren't as fruitful as in years past. Our PTO is also faced with competing Relay fundraisers on our campus. And not just one, but SEVEN (One per grade level, plus a school-wide culminating Relay fundraiser). We have been instructed by the principal to limit our annual Valentine rose sale order taking to less than one week, because of a 3-week Relay Valentine lollipop sale taking place. I really resent the fact that at the beginning of the year we were instructed by the principal to limit our fundraising to 2 primary fundraisers, and ONE outside charity gets to operate 7 fundraisers. I also resent that our students are working so hard to raise money that they are not directly benefitting from. Do any of you out there share this dilemma? How do I discuss this matter with the principal without coming off cold-hearted?
