gift to officers stepping down?

I usually do an engraved key chain with the schools name and the position held. I collect from the other board members or pay myself and give it to the outgoing person at the last meeting.

I agree with Tim.

Our PTA and PTO's have done miriads of things from gift certs to book in their honor at the schools library.'

It mainly depends on what the group and sometimes the recepiant (sp?) are comfortable with. Good PR and showing that people are appreciated can go along way in the 'Hey, that's a cool group, maybe I should check it out' category.

I'm not nearly as adamant as many on this issue, as I believe investing in appreciation is a great way to build your group for the long-term.

I also believe that a too-strong, too-literal interpretation of "for the kids" can be a real detriment to a group.

That said, one nice compromise could be donating a book or books -- with a nice inscription page or credit page -- to the school library in the outgoing officer's honor. Might satisfy both desires.

I totally agree with the others. I feel strongly that PTO funds should be used for the educational needs of our students. Gifts of this nature should be purchased with "personal" money. As a treasurer, I would actually be bothered to know that PTO funds were used to purchase a gift for me. Too difficult to raise funds to do what is needed for our school. Please spend the funds on our children, teachers and school grounds. Just my opinion.

I will second Stargazerlilly motion to publically thank officers for their service. The gift of volunteering is in the act of volunteering. However, if you or others desperately feel a gift is a must put the question of a gift to a vote. You will be spending money - a vote from the general membership can solidify an action.

I might not be the best person to answer this but recently our President resigned mid year and as incoming President I didn't take the initiative to get a gift for her. She had been active in the PTO for several years but a public thank you seems enough for me. I would think someone truly dedicated to the PTO would want the money spent on the school and kids and not themselves. To me, it's not about the glory, it's about doing what's right for our kids!
