President out of control....

17 years 8 months ago #105147 by Lou
We do have by-laws, but frankly they kinda stink. They don't talk about what is important really and have lots of holes in them. I know for the future it makes sense to try to fill in the holes, but don't think that is going to help us now.

The by-laws do not even address this type of issue. I personally have tried to talk to her about some of the issues that other members bring up. They will not deal directly with her, saying she is too unapproachable.

Our principal is known for saying he did not get where he is by choosing sides.......so I don't know what he will add to this. I am getting calls and emails daily that say if she does not step down they will walk away.

It is about as bad as it can be.

At your next board meeting, maybe you could ask for a review of procedures and by laws, to determine how decisions should be made. Also, discuss how you are a team and if there are any problems, to please take them to the person that is the issue. Honestly i don't know what would work with this type of person because she seems to be on a power trip. Maybe talking to the principal would help, but will probably alientate her further from the group.

Although she is the president, if she makes a decision that affects the money, and it was not done according to by-laws, i would not comply. She may not follow the rules, but you should. I would nicely state that you are simply following the laws and when a decision is made according to the rules, then you will be glad to do what is asked.

Don't worry about things she is saying. Actions speak louder than words. She was this type of person before PTO and will be after probably.

Good luck--let us know how things go. Sorry i wasn't much help.

Do you have any by-laws? I would quickly get those and review them.

I run everything by my board, and we have to vote on all points, PARTICULARLY when money is involved, per our by-laws.

Wow. Best of luck!

Due to a district restructure, our PTO is made up of all new members. I am the Treasurer. The problem is the President. She has been speaking badly (without cause) about officers and PTO members to the public. Was caught complaining about PTO members to a School board member redhanded. Continues to make decision without discussions with anyone. When I questioned her about this, she said that it does not say in our by-laws that she has to discuss decisions with anyone, that she is PRESIDENT and can do what she wants. I have a mutiny on my hands. She has alienated too many people - Committee chairs are dropping like flies, no longer wanting to fight this person. I've requested an officer's meeting with all 4 offices and the principal. Any advise?? HELP!!
