TEACHER APPRECIATION & GIFTS

17 years 8 months ago #104956 by LABRADOODLELOVER
We seem to have a lot of bickering amongst our school staff personnel when it comes to "fairness" of PTO gifts & appreciation. I am curious as to how other schools handle giving gifts or performing services for staff. Do you do for everyone or no one?

I will give you some insight on our past blunders: We used to have Teacher Appreciation Week. One day of that week we had a luncheon for "Teachers". It started out that "teachers" were classroom teachers (including gym, music, art, library, special ed, etc.). Then, it was mentioned that we had other staff members that were degreed teachers and that they should be included (traveling math coaches, reading specialists, etc.). Then, the custodians, lunch room staff, and office staff noted that their "luncheons" were not as grand and complained. So....two years ago we went to a staff luncheon. We also made sure that our potluck food days were for everyone, and our daily drawings for prizes were for everyone. Last year, we decided to have a "duty free" lunch for classroom teachers where they could eat lunch with fellow teachers and a parent would watch over the class during lunch. The room mom brought in a box lunch and a drink for them. We got complaints because we didn't do it for everyone. How could we give them a duty free lunch when they don't even have "duty" at lunch (no class to watch over)? All this "fairness" has doubled our PTO expenses, and somehow it seems that the overall point of saying thank you to our teachers has gotten lost in all the bickering. Help!!!!!
