School directory - inappropriate uses

17 years 9 months ago #104794 by pam1500
An anonymous parent, or group of parents, has been sending emails to school parents about a school situation that could become a hot issue.

It's apparent that the email sender, who is using a Yahoo ID and cannot be traced, has used a past directory to get the parent's email addresses. It's just work to sit down and create an email list.

On the one hand, I'm kind of glad that this situation was brought to my attention. It involves only fifth and sixth graders, and my son is only in the fourth. I'm a bit surprised that this situation evolved the way it did, and has festered to the point where someone went to the trouble of typing up email addresses.

On the other hand, it could be a problem. Parents might decide to not be in the directory at all.

Has anyone encountered this type of thing? Our directory has a disclaimer that the info is only for a social convenience, but when it comes down to it, is there any recourse for someone who wants to grab this info and use it for whatever they want?

I'm a bit sensitive on this, because this year I'm putting together the directory, and I have the master Excel file with all the addresses. Plus, I can be a bit of an activist, and have suggested, in the past, a parent board for information sharing. That idea seemed to scare people.

None the less, I would never take school info that was entrusted to me and use it for some other purpose, but I wonder if anyone is wondering about ME!
