vacancy

Usually the V.P. would fill the position. If the Pres. is stepping down with one yr. left then usually the V.P. would fill it as acting Pres. That happened to me a couple of yrs. ago. so I became the pres. for the remainder of her term. V.P. acting as Pres.

Think of it this way, if Pres. Bush was to step down, then V.P. Cheney would assume office for the remainder of Bush's term. If Cheney couldn't do it,I believe that Sec. of State would take office etc... We wouldn't have an election for a new pres. to fill out the remainder of Bush's term.

But it depends on your group, you can hold an election to fill the term of Pres. for one yr. (the remainder of the current pres. term) since it will be vacant. I am assuming you have 2 yr. terms. At the end of next school yr. all positions would be open including the pres.

I suggest getting by-laws in place with the new pres.

I stopped watching soap operas a long time ago. Decided to much drama that I didn't want my boys watching and after awhile it got hard to follow. And not the morals I'm trying to teach my boys either.

rac76 - if you don't have bylaws, you can still follow a parliamentary authority. The favorite seems to be Robert's Rules of Order. Check out www.rulesonline.com .

I would suggest that all interested parties, including the current v.p., be listed as candidates for the president position. Have an election during the June meeting. The person winning the majority votes wins the position for next year.

fyi - my group's bylaws say that the vp is to fill in for the president whenever necessary. That applies to the current term only. That isn't your situation. Your president intends to see out this term (year). In my opinion that means it's an open position for next year and an election process should be followed.

Our president has informed the other officers and myself that she is not taking on the job for next year. She had it this past year, and was going to continue to be president. Now she's not. Well, the vice president has offered to step up and fill in the position. The response was that the pres. has talked with other people that seem interested, and she told the v.p. to wait until the meeting in June to discuss it. Just an fyi..we DO NOT have by-laws at all. So does the above situation sound fair to you all, or should the v.p. be allowed to take over. Then just fill in the v.p. position. I think that's how it should be done. I don't know who the others are that are interested, so I'm a little nervous to see the selection. I'm trying not to get into the middle..I just want everything to run smoothly (I have suggested by-laws, hopefully it will be talked about at the next mtg).

The above is one of the reasons why I don't watch soap operas, there is just too much drama in real life!! Thanks for reading. ~rac
