Posting minutes, agendas, budgets

Our PTA is separate from the school, we are on their/our website mainly because I designed it. So far the District has no problem with the way its setup. Soon I think we'll be on a separate one, have to get my tech center fixed so I can run our own URL instead of being on the school systems 'Hunk-o-junk' network.

We have always posted our PTA budget for anyone regardless of their membership status with the PTA, our reasoning (and not everyone has to do it this way) is the nonmembers and community can see where it goes (they just have no right to complain- If they dont join- I guess they can complain it just falls on almost deaf ears- I'll listen to just about anyone :cool: )

The school budget should be publically available, but the PTO should be a private organization separate from the school. So technically they don't need to be publically available - altough any member of the PTO has the right to see and understand them at any time.

Currently, we don't put those items on our web site. Just this week we were talking about adding the PTO Meeting Minutes to the web site - so we will probably be doing that soon. The agenda is wrapped up in the meeting minutes so we probably won't be posting them separately - at least for now.

We haven't talked about posting the Treasurers reports. I don't think we would do it on a public site. The reports are intended for PTO members and not for everyone out on the 'net. I would be more likely to post them when the webmaster includes some kind of login procedures for our parents to gain access to certain areas. he has talked about doing that, but I think it won;t be addressed until sometime down the road.

Check the PTA Links (The agenda, board, fundraisers pops up), the Newsletters also, and under About Us (school mtgs) the only budget link (currently) under Administration the Mission Statement Page. The PTA page has a budget link is only a blank excel page (mtg is tomorrow)

We have and are going to post more items as soon as they get them to me to update.

All are public records especially the schools, they have to be available to whomever wants to look at them. I told our principal, "Would you rahter have 'em come inton your office to check the books or read it on the website?".

As for newletters or info,etc. It just easier for other parents to read at work or home plus it doesnt get lost or misplaced (ask my wife about me not saving the Wed packets)

Unless they've got something to hide, the more place parents and community can access info about the school/pTA/PTo the better in my not so humble opinion. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Does any school out there post PTO board minutes, agendas, budgets, survey results, etc on their school website? I hav suggested this and met with resistance from the principal and superintendent.
Is this stuff not public information? Is there any good reason NOT to do this?

I feel it would keep parents better informed and generate a greater sense of ownership among parents. I am getting alot of strange defensive vibes, just for asking.
If I could point to some schools that operate on an "open book" policy and hear the benefits of making this type of information accessible, I feel like I could make a better case for it.

The PTO pres sympathizes with the idea, but is swamped with other duties and doesn't want to rock the boat.
Any advice?
