No meetings due to sports

We have a meeting every month from September to June except for December. It is usually the second Tuesday at 7PM, except when there is a conflict with a religious or secular holiday (like Election Day).

It seems strange that a PTO wouldn't meet during a sports season - isn't there always a sports season? Maybe the board (or a previous board) all had kids on different teams and so it was hard to plan for PTO meeting around those schedules. Or maybe the schedules weren't known when the PTO calendar had to be filled out. Or maybe attendence at the meeting dropped so during the season that it wasn't worth having meetings.

Were the meetings really scheduled and then cancelled because of sports? That doesn't make sense to me. I can understand if the Pres doesn't want to miss a meeting, but there should be some way of getting together over that time period. That is about a quarter of the school year.

We have our meetings at 4pm. We only cancel them if school is cancelled or weather has gotten so bad that we don't want anyone out in it. We also have meetings every month except January.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

We have our meetings at 7:00 at night and no we have never cancelled a meeting. I cannot imagine going all that time without a meeting as there is always so much going on.

Maybe you can suggest that they hold their meetings at a different time during the sports season when there is a conflict.

Also...they may be in violation of their bylaws if they say they must hold a meeting every month.

We don't, but then again, we have meetings at lunch time, and no one but the board and MAYBE another parent or two show up anyway. Maybe you could suggest having lunchtime meetings during sports season since you have so much work to do. It seems a little odd to me, too.

Just wondering if your schools cancel meetings during sports seasons. We have. I thought it was a little odd, but since I am not a board member and it is always done this way I didn't say anything. I figure I am new and some things aren't worth mentioning. But we have canceled our next 2 1/2 months worth of meetings because of a sports season. I was like okay, what about Christmas store, fall fundraiser, etc., etc., etc... I guess whatever the committees decide will have to work because there is no general meeting to address it at.

Just wondering if you guys/gals do this?
