Where do I start?

Get together with you new officers, and out going officers if possible. Discuss traditions and new ideas. Make a month by month calender for events, meetings and such. Figure out where money might be going and what needs to be discussed with the general members. I am sure you will do just fine. I was a sahm when I started too. ;)

Good luck, this was my first year as president with an already established board. I just went along for the ride and did the organizing. Now I'm going to kick it into hi gear for the following year. It was a lot more work than I expected, but it sure keeps me in touch with things after being home for 7 years. The PTO Today magazine and website have been a godsend. We plan on trying the Million minute reading program next year and gearing everything towards that theme. Although our school will probably be the half million minute program.

I would also suggest that you communicate your policy regarding the handling of funds to all your board members and chairpeople. You might want to get together with your treasurer beforehand and work out the details. This way everyone is (hopefully) on the same page. Good Luck!

I agree with SHC about getting to know those you will have to work closely with. An agenda and schedule of events is probably what I would do second (if it isn't already in place). Then I would go over past financials and work with the Treasurer on a budget and goals for next year. Having this in place by next fall will give you a firm footing to your first year. Good luck.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

I am ending my first and only year as President of our PTO and I got TONS of good ideas from this website and forum. I would think you need to assemble your "team", if you haven't already...the people who will help you for next year. Meet with your principal and get an idea of your events and fundraisers and find your chairmen for these events and take it one event at a time. Have fun! I really enjoyed my year.

I just became the new president at the school. I'm a sahm and wanted to get involved with the school which I have been but I have never done anything like this. I have been getting tons of info from the website and I am great at organizing. But do any of you have tips on where to start? What should my main goals be for the next few months?

Thanks

Cindy
