Our PTA mtg's are once a month on the 3rd Wed morning of each month.
Our mtg's are attended by 8-10 regulars (board plus a couple extra) even when we've attached it to another type of activity.

After hardly having anyone at our monthly meeting we tried every other month- not too bad but still lacking. So we decided to latch on to Family Nights, etc by having our meetings then. For instance if Title 1 has something planned they usually provide dinner first- we have our meeting when dinner is ending but before the actual event starts. We hold our Board meetings 30 minutes before other meetings. And of course we do alot of Board business by phone and email.

we have a meeting every month from September to June at 6:30. I have to say that having childcare really made a difference in our attendance, we also do not have a pto board like most groups...everything is discussed openly. I do meet with our principal ahead if there are any heated concerns. I also send out regular e-mails if there is any info that needs to be shared. There are other schools in our district that rotate days/times. we tried rotating days but that doesn't seem to help us at all. this year our meetings are averaging 21 people which is up from last year, we keep going up.I will add that about 98% of our volunteers work at least parttime!

We only have 6 meetings. We had one pretty much every month when I started out. A vetran teacher talked to me about dropping some. I think it improved attendance somewhat. If you board decides everything anyhow you could do with less than that. I just wanted to make sure everyone was involved with major decisions. I think rotating times wouldn't be a bad idea. Some of our teachers and parents( ;) ) have night classes and parents schedules differ greatly.

We hardly ever have people show up that aren't on the board so we did away with two meetings 2 years ago. We have never had the problem I hear of most with this of someone wanting something done and they bring enough people to throw the vote. Anyway, we do one meeting (1st Monday at 4) and it lasts about one hour. We also have an email list incase we need to contact each other throughout the month.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

We were a mostly new board this past year. We scheduled meetings on a regular day/time (third Wed every month) in the hopes people would be able to plan for it. Well, this didn't work out quite so well.

At the PTO conference in March, I met several people who did not have monthly meetings. Rather there were (at least) monthly board meetings and regular meetings with principals. I am contemplating this for next year and wanted to get some input.

At a minimum I know this will require a change to the by-laws. This is something I am not too concerned with.

Thanks,
Gene
