We have always made it a point to say "monies raised will go toward _____" never use the words "ALL monies raised..."
The entire executive board knew of the need to reallocate funds at the time, but I have a new member who is trying to make an issue of this.

Did you (as a membership)vote to use the ropes fund to cover your other costs? If so, it shouldn't be an issue, since everyone should know what is going on. If not, it probably should be a topic of discussion at your next meeting.

Does your group have a budget for the year? We are required to create a budget each year that outlines the specific amounts the will be spent for each line item during the year. Any long term project is kept in a restricted fund. Any substantial changes have to be voted on by the general membership as the changes come up; if we fall short or have extra money, that is something that is presented to the group for discussion and vote.

Did you tell people that you were raising funds specifically for the rope challenge? No matter our intention, we try to say it's for our general fund which help supports ______ to make sure it doesn't become an issue.

I really need some help with this one - we are a non-profit PTO in NJ. We have had an on-going fundraiser for 3 years now to try and install a "low-ropes challenge course" in our Middle School. The problem is that last year's general fundraisers fell way low of expectations, and ended up spending most of the ropes course funds. Now I am frantically trying to raise more funds to put those funds back where they belong.
Just wondering if there are any legal issues here, or does this just make us look really bad. :confused:
