We had out meeting last night and amazingly a parent said "This is not a time to worry what we would say, they needed our help and they should get it." Our Executive Director (original Principal) was there too to thank us for our quick response.
Shelley, it was the same with this little boy. Mom thought it was the flu and he just couldn't shake it until his temp shot up. By then it was too late. My mom reminded me of when I was 12 with chicken pox and temp of 103 for two days. Obviously I made it okay but she said she was never as scared as when the town "Doc" came to the farm (unheard of now!) to check on me.
The worst is hearing moms judge his mom's actions. They don't belive in medical treatment. I walk away from those conversations because my mom was in the same boat, she couldn't take me into town but knew doc would come to the house.....
The kids are doing better, many have folders in his favorite color (we'll talk later about finding orange folders!) and write letters, draw, and pass notes for their "special folder".
Praying this will be the first and only but I can only pray this makes me a little wiser and just a smidge more prepaired how to handle everything....
Good lord, why do these things happen around the holidays.
We had a 12 year old boy get hit by a car (a neighbor of mine, sad to say)last Friday night. He is in very critical condition with massive head trauma and is in a coma. It is very touch and go right now. His family is so very devastated. Could everyone please say a prayer for this boy as you read this. He really needs all the help he can get.
It is really weird for me because I keep getting this vision in my head that while he lays in a coma, it is like he is sitting on the fence up at the pearly gates and looking at both sides and trying to decide which side he is going to jump too.

what a complete tragedy! A family here in town lost their 7 yr old to spinal meningitis about 3 years ago. She went in the hospital and died in about 24 hours before anyone could figure out what happened.(Moral of that story: get to a PEDIATRIC intensive care quickly--she did not get there quick enough and it was not recognized)
You can't second guess yourself. You have to act quick and your gesture was so generous that I'd be shocked if anyone complained.
Six years ago our school lost a little 3rd-grader and her dad to a car wreck. Donations purchased two benches with plaques on them in the school courtyard.
Mykids- my heart goes out to you and your school! I thought my school was bad, losing two parents in one week, but there's nothing so devastating as losing a child!
PTA, PTO is doesn't really matter what you are. We were told by our wonderful county Pres. that we can't collect for something like that(as a PTA)however we are very quick to act as a group of parents. We've had our class parents call people and we've hit parents up on the sidewalks. Everyone asked has contributed, no questions asked!My personal feelings are if county doesn't like it they can throw us out!
This is why I chose to live where I do, because of the sense of community. The neighbors are there for each other. The school is like a big family(and it's ok to have a couple of thorns thrown in). And for some stupid lady to tell you it's not in the rules, that's just wrong.
Do what's in your heart, what you'd want them to do for you, if god-forbid the tables where turned.Find a way around the rules, it is after all the right thing to do!
The check was written to the school with the invoice reading "room rental" (the CFO had the same consern but was happy we "stepped up").
I don't think I have hugged my kids so much! The art teacher had him two days before his death. His last project was a beautiful rabbit made with tissue paper. Out of her own pocket, she had it matted and framed to give to the family. He did have a brother in 5th grade and their class is just as upset.
In all this my best friend had her baby this past week....a boy..... [img]smile.gif[/img] it's amazing how all that works, no matter what you believe.
kmamom - I agree with you that the legal technicalities don't matter at this point - but I'm not so sure that legally it's a "no".
This is a tough area for any group policy-wise. If you do you it once, where do you draw the line, how often, etc. etc. etc.
When I asked an IRS rep about this supposed prohibition of "gifts" to individuals, he said it was not just a definite "no". Of course the group is not supposed to benefit its organizers, leaders, etc. That's not to say it can never provide anything tangible to a person.
A teacher retiring and your group wants to give a gift? A tragic situation and your group wants to send flowers or make donation? What if instead of a nice flower arrangement, they want to give the family a $50 gift card? More? Where does it begin and end?
His response was that groups need to use common sense, taking into account the mission of the organization, the budget, the frequency of such gifts, and each specific situation.
mykidsmom - whether or not this was the best "policy" decision, I don't know. But it sounds like a good human decision and it's done, so why belabor it anyway? Good luck to all of you in the days to come.
