Issues from the Past PTO board

Sounds like your on the right track. One thing that concerns me is; if the now treasurer negelected to deposit that much money when she had such a long time to do it, she'll probably do that again.

I would make a rule about at your exec. board meeting. That way everyone could agree that depostits need to be made ASAP.

What do your bylaws look like? Take a look at them, if they are outdated perhaps it time for a revision committee, to be appointed at a general meeting.

Keep smiling. Send out those newsletters and all that good stuff on how everyone needs to work together to make your school and parent group an even better place. Remember, Rome was not built in a day!

This is going to be kinda long – I apologize for that in advance!

I have been suspecting that there were problems in the PTO of my child’s school for some time. The Executive Board has been secretive, not having meetings, never giving any monetary disclosures, we and the never knew what was being taken in or what was being spent or what projects they were working on.

I complained to the Principal about the way they were operating last year and again at the first of this year. There are other parents in the school who feel the same way but never say anything. Well – I complained so much, I was APPOINTED President. There were no elections, nothing. I was somewhat uncomfortable with this, but I took the appointment and went on. As of now, non-executive board participation is non existent (mainly due to the attitude of the previous board) meaning all decisions are made in Executive Session. So in an Executive Board meeting, we decided to add signers to the checking account.

We retained the past president and she was placed in the role of Treasurer. Due to some family circumstances, she is out of pocket for about 6 weeks, so I asked for the check book. This is where it gets bad. I went to the bank to check on the status of the issue of the signers, they have not been changed. I asked what the balance in the account was; it was missing $465 in cash that was raised one month ago yesterday. The deposit was never made. I raised a huge stink at the school with the principal, she tracked down the former president-current treasurer and she had the cash at her house and gave no excuse as to why it has not been deposited in ONE MONTH.

I take start looking at the books and they don’t jibe with the information that WAS released by the previous administration, money (over $500) was spent on a dinner and gifts for the previous executive board an much more. It is a great mess.

When I took this position, I explained that I was going to run an entirely open door/open book organization. Upon learning this information, I am planning on conducting a meeting with the current Executive Board and laying out what I have found out. I think it is totally wrong for PTO funds to go to a Dinner Party for the executive board, while there are classes that cannot go on field trips because there are no funds for busses (five buses could have been rented with that money).

Any other suggestions?

Sorry for the long post and thanks!
