Talent Show

We charged $1.00 for adults and $.50 for non-participating students. The reason it was so low is because we are such a low income area and we wanted everyone to have a chance to see the kids talents.

Our major money loss was on the trophies. They cost around $250.00, I think there were 15 of them. We didn't have a stage, we have one we can set up but we invisioned dancers falling off of it. So we used a carpet, the back drop was from our King/Queen ceremony, a mom had a spotlight rug, another mom brought a spot light she purchased at Wal Mart.

We also served refreshments it was supposed to be for the families of participating students. Our principal didn't want any concessions or refreshments served during the performances because she was afraid that people would be running back and forth and disturbing the contestants (we have a small school). Get this- people were sending their kids into the closed cafeteria, I happened to catch kids playing with the soda fountian! Our show lasted about 3 hrs. people were getting restless. We had about 30 kids performing. We probably should have done tryouts, but none of us on the committee had the heart to do it.

Thank you for the info. Did you charge admission? If so, how much? If you lost money what were your expenses (lighting, dj, etc...)?

We used to do a Talent Show after our King/Queen ceremonies at our night time Fall Festival. Our new principal felt that this wasn't focusing enough on the kids talents so she wanted it at a later date. The last 2 years we have done this in the Spring and have lost money on it. This last year we added an "art show" with it. I think if we had it earlier in the year before everyone got burned out it would help.

We had it divided up so much that almost everyone in it got a trophy. We made participation certificates for everyone too. It was a lot of work but well worth it. This year our winners received an invitation to perform at our state fair!

We had these catagories: Singing, Dancing, Music, and Misc. (such as poem reciting and skits). Our judges were local teachers and talents but no one from our school. If the kids were singing they needed karoke type cd's. So you can turn the lyrics off. One little girl had a cd playing in her ear and sang along with it.

We would like to do it as a fundraiser. We were thinking of selling tickets but would like to know what other schools do.
