Movie/Family Fun Night?

We had our first Movie Night last week. We showed Monsters, Inc. and had 117 people show up. We charged $1 per person and gave everyone a bag of popcorn. Everyone sat on the floor and had a great time. We plan to have 3 more this year and hope to make enough to pay the $350 for our license. It's been the best new idea for family fun!

Dear InvolvedMom:

We are considering a "Soup and a Movie Night" for our school. You mentioned Swank Motion Pictures. How do I get in touch with them? Our tech person at school is reluctant to show a movie because of the franchise issue. Thank you for your help.

We've done 2 movie nights last year and plan on doing more this year. For starters, we nominated some "G" movies and had the kids vote on them, that was alot of work to go through all the ballots. Second time the PTO voted on the movie. We've watched Spy Kids and Atlantis the Lost Empire. We have siblings, students, parents even middle and high school students have showed up. Kids are more than welcome to bring pillows, blankets, slippers, lawn chairs, etc. We sell red rope licorice (a big hit), ice cream, popcorn, drinks, etc. The concessions range from .50 cents to .75 cents. We don't charge for admission. We have a projector that we hook up to laptop and project it onto the gym wall, (it turns out to be about as big as in theatre) We usually make about $200. It is a blast and everyone likes it.

We have also thought about this idea. I found a place called Swank Motion Pictures that will rent you the movie (price depends on how new it is) They take care of the copy right. We did plan on an admission but a small one just to cover our costs. Refreshments would be siimple juice, popcorn (we bought a popcorn maker awhile back) and some candy) WE have not gotten much further on the detail of seationg and what to show it on. someone did suggest making a moveable white wall. Hpe this helps

I had suggested this to our principle, but she wanted to know more details. Only I am not sure how you go about setting up the whole movie in the gym thing. Has anybody done this? Know exactly what is involved? Where you get the movie from? Do you charge or not? DO you sell snacks, like popcorn or drinks like juice, how much do you charge for these sort of things? DO you set up chairs or have them bring their own "seats" (blankets/bean bag chairs, etc)? Obviously, you get a movie that will appeal to all ages, but how do you choose? Do you invite the whole school and siblings? We have 650 students in our pre-k through third school. Do you have any other activities going on at the same time? And the questions go on..... Any ideas would be appreciated. I just thought this is another way to give back to them, rather than always asking them for money and help. :D
