girls' activity/boys' activity

We also had the same discussion last year. In previous years they have had a Mother/son Halloween activity night and a Father/Daughter dance on Valentine's Day. But we also felt it was unfair to those who did not have a Mom or Dad. Or for the daughters that would not be able to come because Dad is a 3rd shifter, I mean there are all kinds of scenarios and all different kinds of solutions. So we decided to try a family activity night for Halloween last and it was a big hit. We did it again for this year and we had the same amount of students and parents attend. Some have mentioned about bringing back the Father/daughter dance and some have suggested doing a Family Dance night. We feel strongly that we should promote more family oriented activities because too many families are all going in separate directions.

How old are the kids? How comparable are the events? Remember that boys and girls do have different interests. And you are only talking about one event, right?

As long as the events are comparable, this sounds like a good thing to me. Maybe the school has a counselor or psychologist who could address the PTO about the benefits of the separate activities?

If there were no differences, all we would need is one kid-scout organization.

I am a PTO CO-President this year. Every year we have the same heated discussion about the grils activity and the boys activity. In the past we have had one activity for boys and another for the girls. we only separate them for this one time, however we have one group of parents who feel that it is unfair to have separate activities, based on gender, for the kids. HOw have others handled this.
