father/daughter mother/son dance

17 years 11 months ago #90144 by chgpta
For the past 3 years we have had a Somebody Loves Me Dance for 4th & 5th graders only. It is a parent-child dance, and all participants must come with an adult guardian (aunt, grandparent, etc). We have used the school librarian and a professional photographer to take individual pictures of the kids on a backdrop that we made ourselves and it is very well attended, about 200 people each year. We serve a sit down dinner so it's not a moneymaker, but since it's at the end of the year, we're not really trying to raise funds, just don't want to lose any.

our kids loved the valentines jam dance we put on. get a dj and many djs have a playlist that is only for children. we charged five dollars admission. five dollars got you into the dance and a choice of hot dog or nachos, a drink and a bag of potato chips. we sold hot dogs, chips, nachos, and candy. we made about five hundred dollars profit. (about 200 kids came)

we also gave away door prizes we received as donations from various vendors.

our sixth graders did not mind dancing with first graders. you wind up getting more chaperones because many parents stay.

word to the wise, if parents stay, make them pay reduced admission because as chaperones we gave them free hot dogs, etc. it was a little costly.

also consider getting a photographer. the kids loved having their pictures taken.

Our parent assoc. is considering hosting a parent/child dance this year for the first time. I have never attended one of these dances and could use some help. We are a k-12 school. Do you think certain grades would appreciate the dance more than others. We cannot have it for the whole school. (seniors don't want to dance with 1st graders) What have you offerd at these type of dances? What type of food have you had and what price did you charge? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
