I've just become the volunteer coordinator at our school with a non-active HSA there are 3 other parents and myself in addition to a new school principal so the question is how do we know if we have a movie license we are a catholic school.
We just held our first Family Movie Night and it really went well. We didn't have a hugh turnout but only two pieces of info went home on it and we found out later that some people didn't get the fliers until the day of the event. So we have about 30 turn out which was good. We only charged a can of soup..we tied it in with the schools soup drive. Then we sold snacks for .50 cents a piece. Popcorn, juice, water, pickles, soft drinks...etc. The school already has a license and they pay that every year so we were covered there. We also had a few door prizes as well. It was great time and I look forward to having more Movie Nights along with other fun family nights!

We do dinner and a movie just before the Thanksgiving Holidays or just after. This year we're showing Wall-E (working on license is easy--usually just a phone call and credit card. Go to movlic.com or google movie licenses). We send out a flier that list the information and requirements to register. We can only take the first 250, and they can come in PJs and with pillows and blankets to recline on the floor (some folks have brought beach chairs in the past. Dinner is a prepacked brown bag with a hotdog, juice box and bag of chips. We sell tickets for 2 dollars and then we sell popcorn for a quarter a bag.
Make sure to brief the kids before you start the movie on their conduct expectations (no running etcetera).
Just an FYI...YOU NEED TO HAVE A MOVIE LICENSE TO SHOW ANY MOVIE AT YOUR SCHOOL (IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO SHOW MOVIES WITHOUT IT) IT COSTS AROUND $400 FOR THE YEAR. BUT... YOU CAN ALSO CHECK THE NATIONAL PTA WEBSITE BECAUSE SOMETIMES THEY GET A DEAL AND THEY WILL SEND YOU THE MOVIE AND YOU CAN SHOW IT WITHOUT THAT LICENSE BUT YOU HAVE TO GIVE THE MOVIE AWAY AT THE END OF THE SHOWING (you can only show it once at school)
We just had a movie night last week. We had a little over 100 people show up. We sold popcorn and juice for 25¢. We also borrowed a projector that hooks up to the VCR and TV and then onto the screen. I just took over a non-active PTO this year. My first meeting is tomorrow night! GASP!
