Used Book Sales

I have done a used book sale at our school for the past 4 years and am working on this years. We do a book drive in May for a late June sale. We accept ALL books and then sort them when we set-up. If we see anything that we think is not appropriate then we take it out. Last year we started an adult reading section and ended the sale on our family movie night. We also accept educational items but NOT videos, CD's, etc... since we don't want to be responsible if they don't work. We started this event to get the kids fresh books for the summer and to make sure everyone could get a book. Most of our kids can't afford the Scholastic Book fair. We sell the books for 25 or 50 cents and usually use the 100 page mark as the guide. We also allow our teachers to pay for books for their students with their classroom accounts and do not open the sale up for everyone until all of the classes have visited. It is an easy event but takes a lot of time. I'm not sure what else you want to know or if this helps you.

We have held a sale the last four springs. We accept all types of books, including religious titles. So far no one has complained about any of the titles. We screen the very violent and sexually explict titles and the workers monitor what the kids purchase as well. We collect books, computer games, and movies throughout the school year in a box in the lobby. Our profits range from $500 - $1000. Our biggest purchasers are our teachers. They can expand their classroom libraries very inexpensively. A used book sale is very easy to do and a lot of fun. My daughter loves to sort through the books.

After reading the thread about the Book Swap, I was curious to hear from those that have held Used Book fairs.

Do you also accept books for all reading levels including adults?

If you are a public school, have you had to limit certain books that can be donated, such as not allowing any books with religious content? Obviously, sexually explicit books wouldn't find their way onto the tables.

Do you also accept computer software, video games, movies, educational toys, and puzzles?
If you do, how well do these items sell?

I guess my thought is, the more options available the better and the principal would have the last say on whether she/he would feel if some contents of books would not be appropriate for a public school.

I just know books with religious material in them has been a touchy subject in our district in the past, but don't know how it affect a used book sale.
