Nicurn,

Do you have any professional sports teams in your area that do promotions? How about someone from a TV or radio station to come and read to the children?

We are doing the Book It reading through Pizza Hut this year, but I am planning on calling on our AHL WB-Scr Penguins to come to our school.

We also have a Phillies triple A team the Scr-WB Red Barons who also sponsor reading programs.

I know the hockey team does a lot of apperances.

Just my 2 cents worth.

best wishes,

Renee ;)

we asked each teacher or volunteer to dress up as a book character and they not only looked the part they read from the book.example i was raggedy ann. and i dressed like her. we also had mother goose. it was a great day. we took turns going ito each classroom. we had it timed for every thirty minutes. i am a volunteer and i loved it so did our teachers and students. hope this is an idea for you.take pictures for your scrap book we did. thanks

We do a special reading event in the fall during the week of our book fair with "guest readers".
Our guests included the mayor, police chief, fire chief, our mail carrier, one teacher's mom is a nurse she came, we had a paramedic and one of the "story time" employees at our local library. I would even try local news reporters or sports figures. Just give them enough time to plan for the event and we had the professionals who have uniforms wear them for the event.

Hope that helps!!

We do a "Reading Incentive Program" that starts every January....there is a different theme every year. This is past year was a "Patriotic" in the past we have done "Solar System" "Under the Sea" etc.

The kids receive a book mark for easch stop along the reading path....each bookmark is specific for that child's grade level. They are required to read so many minutes (set per grade) per bookmark and they record the minutes on the bookmark and return them when completed. Each boomark corresponds with one stop in the program. Boomarks are recorded each week and the kids markers are moved along the pathways on a giant bulletin board display in the hallway. The kids love seeing their progress and we give out prizes each week for the stops completed. This year we had flag pencils for the first stop, patriotic sticker sheets for the second, a local restaurant "kids free" meal certificate for the third, a gel pen for the 4th, a free admission certificate to the aquatic park in our area for the 5th, and then each year the kids who make it to the final stop receive a certificate worth $5.00 to be redeemed at the Book Fair that March. The program is a huge success and we increase participation each year.

hi guys, each march, we do a reading program. Usually this involves guest readers, an assembly, decorating contest etc. This past year the reading specialist was not very pleased because she didn't think it was planned early enough. She also wants prizes, etc. I really didn't have much to do with it as I had a chairperson for the event who had done it the year before. My question I guess is really, where do I start to look for "guest readers". I think we need a new theme also.... any suggestions? We've done stars, space paws for reading (our mascot is a husky) the program just needs some ooomph I think, it's getting old. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks, maggie
