i would give each adult entering a ticket or give each teacher a ticket adn raffle it that way.. group like items if you can to make a smaller number of "equal" baskets. like group movie rentals, gc for food and such in one basket
What we recently did with an overabundance of donations is had a 'summer-themed' lottery ticket raffle. We listed ALL items on the ticket (we had restaurant certificates, park admissions, free hotel nights, tickets to theater, etc.) plus we spent about $500 and added other items like cases of soda, beer, wine, misc. items that would go with the theme of the ticket like a gas grill, paper plates, vegetables, condiments, etc. A local butcher gave us a $300 certificate for meat and only charged us $150. We sold the tickets for $5 each. Our $500 investment netted a profit of over $4,000. The person with the 3-digit winning number from the nightly state lottery won everything!
We sent our letters out late since we debated about it. They have gone out in June or July but we didn't send them until late August. We actually had responses the next week. We have received Magic Mt. tickets, ski lift tickets, mountain train ride for family of 4, $25 Mimi's gift card, $25 in gift cert. from Weinerschnitzel (sp?), the $100 gift card from Circuit City. Our list is mainly local businesses in the Madera, Fresno and Clovis area here in CA. There are several strings on this forum that have names and addresses, positive and negative donations, etc... you might try those.
Pam - I was wondering how long it takes to start receiving the donations after you send out your letters. Also, do you have that list readily available. Our PTO is brand new and I'd love to be able to show what we can do with a little effort - especially being able to go outside the community.
As far as the extras (and I've thought of this as well for our carnival - I don't want to bother the monies that can be earned by the baskets that the school has had established for the last few years)- you could just set them back and start having drawings closer to Christmas. You could also set up a bingo game or something similar and use these as prizes. I hope you get some better ideas - these just crossed my ever so confused mind.
