Fundraisers

I don't know anything about skateboarding but a fundraiser that has helped us is SCRIP. We have not yet signed up nationally but we called 2 of our local grocery stores, (since every family grocery shops) and we purchase gift certificates from them. We send order form's home w/ the students on Monday, they return them on Tuesday w/ a check, we order the certificates requested and return them to the students on Friday. We receive 6% of every $1 from the merchants and if the parents purchase is less than they certificate ($25 certificate and only spent $10) they receive a cash refund. The schools profits off of parents normally weekly purchases. These certificate's do not expire and if its a national chain store, they can be used at any of the merchants stores nation wide. The draw back is we have to remind parents weekly w/ signs in the car line that its time to order the SCRIP and once they get off of the routine of buying, its hard to get them back. But overall, its worth all the time we spend. Hope this helps and sorry its so long!!!

Our school holds a walkathon in a reservation that is state property adjacent to our elentary school. We found out we needed to obtain a permit in order to do this. This was obtained through the town. I would contact the town/city counsel office. The attorneys there will be able advise you on any liabilty and also if permits would be required to hold the event. When we hold our event, it is held during a school day, and we require permission slips, therefore the liabilty falls on the school. But in your case, if it held after school hours and not on school property, I would suggest speaking with the town/city counsel office just for your own protection.

I am the a new PTO President and im trying to find ways of raising money without actually sending our children out to sell. The idea of having a proffessional skateboard exhibition came to my attention. The proffessionals in our state would do this event for free and we would charge to see this event. However it would be held at a city park location and Im not sure of what the legal responsibilities would be towards our school. Can someone give me some insight?
