I, too, am a tomboy - as is my 10-y-o daughter. My son would prefer sports night, but if being with mom meant crafts, he'd be fine with that. However, the kind folks who have stepped up to chair the mom/daughter and dad/son events picked their events - I really don't want to step on volunteer toes.

The moms who are planning sports night for the dad/son event are planning to have the volleyball net set up, basketball on one court, and using the school's scooters for races/games. We are lucky to have a double court gym as it is shared with the park district. (Makes scheduling interesting, but that's a whole nother story.) The food will be sports oriented - cupcakes decorated as different balls, and the other food will have themed names "sock it to me punch" or whatever.

Each of these parent/child events is held from 6:00 - 8:30 at night, and don't forget to have the participants dress in theme - team uniform or something along those lines so when you do the memory photos it's memorable.

Hope this helps.

In this age of total political correctness, it might be wise to hold sport night for the girls too, as well as a craft night for the boys (think about gifts for Mom). As a girl, I was much more into sports than crafts. As a mother of 3 children, two of which are boys, I can say that crafts go a long way for both sexes. Just ask any 3rd grade boy.

IMovePeople, What ideas do have on the Sports Night? I am interested in having one for my childs school and I was wondering how things would be ran, the hours this would be held, refreshements, etc. Could you please inform me on your info about this. You could e-mail me if you would like to, or just post it here. Thanks a bunch!

We've historically done daddy/daughter and mother/son activities. This year daddy/daughter was a hoe down, last year a sock hop. This year mother/son was 70's night (yes, we all dug to the backs of our closets - more Mork & Mindy look alikes than I care to remember). Just be careful if your area has a lot of single parent households to be sure everyone knows that any opposite gender adult is welcome (grandpa, uncle, "father-figure", etc.) We charged $12.00 per "couple" and an extra $5.00 if the family had more than one of that gender kid - had a photographer there who took family photos which went home about 10 days later. The admission also included decorations, refreshments, and prizes for the most appropriately dressed to the theme.

This year we are adding (not dances) mother/daughter and father/son activities - sports night in the gym for the guys and we think (not 100% final) craft night for the girls. I'm thinking of calling in Michaels to just take over the mom/daughter thing rather than try to pull that off ourselves. We've had countless volunteers for the father/son, believe it or not!

Good luck!
