You can also go to your local Movie Theater. They throw out their old popcorn, which is still pretty good. That would be free to the school.

yes, Election rules vary state by state - check your laws first.

On another idea.

Don't rule out selling popcorn - the profit margin is HUGE! If you're doing the election day bake sale - you can catch people coming in after work and THEY ARE STARVING. Sell some pop with the popcorn, too.

If you can't rent a commercial popper - consider getting a couple of those stir-crazy poppers (they look like flying saucers with a plastic dome). They run under $20 each.

Stir crazy's can pop 6 qts of popcorn in under 3 minutes (much faster than their big commercial counterparts), you would need a couple of the machines and a clean bin to process the popcorn into bags.

I got all excited in September when I first saw the idea about and Election Day bake sale (here on this website). Everyone I mentioned it too, including the principal, was on board. But...when I called the local Clerk's office, who confirmed her answer with out State's Election office, we were told we couldn't do anything within 100' of the gym (polling place). That would have put us and our muffins on the road! Bummer! We would have sold a ton of goodies. On to the next good idea...

I hate to even post this...after all my hard work, ordering 15 dozen doughtnuts, the cups/lids, bought 10 boxes of hot cocoa, got volunteers, blah.. blah.. blah..oh did I mention talked to the town hall 3x, our bake sale on election day was cancelled today!!!!Uh it's in what 7 days?.. Due to Homeland Security nobody is allowed on school property that does not belong there. Does that include the voters and campaigners? Our town has a population of 1600, no I did not forget a 0. I don't want to sound nonchalant, but why would a terrorist bother, we don't even have a gas station! Has anybody else been shut down?

Academy--Welcome to the boards! Congratulations on such a great bake sale!

We have a very nice Dunkin Donuts in our town, and if someone shows up there when they close at midnight, they'll give you the donuts they were going to throw away. They can be used the next morning and are still fresh enough!

Our High School Music Boosters are VERY successful at our town's celebratory day every year. Each member is asked to donate a half tray of either sausage and peppers or meatballs in sauce. They get hero rolls donated and then charge $4.00 a sandwich. This year they sold out, and they netted close to $2,000!

We find chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies do well, as well as snicker doodles. Brownies always sell well, as well as cupcakes. We have our bakers prewrap everything, and it makes things so much easier. Another thing that goes are mini loaves of zucchini, pumpkin or banana bread.

Those are such great suggestions!!! I am definitely going to CASE them!!! (CASE = Copy And Steal Everything). Thanks alot. I'll keep you posted on how we do with your suggestions.

Where did you hold your bake sale? Did you find that some items sold better than others?

We held the bake sale in the school. We have a large foyer in the front of the building and set up shop there so all who entered the school could see and come by to buy. The cookies and cupcakes, of course. But the teachers loved the Assorted Muffins and the kids also loved the mixed chips (doritos, pretzels, etc). We had lots of parent and community donations. Many parents also came to the school to purchase some treats as well!!!
