Boxtops as Payment

Last year we let children turn in Box Tops for 2 months prior to our carnival for free tickets. Some children brought so many they didn't have to buy tickets at the door. We also run a Box Tops Store in our lunch room every Friday where kids can purchase items for 1-2 Box Tops. We don't have many Box Tops in our house-I like generic stuff-but my son has let the relative close to us know that he is collecting them and he got over 100 in 2 months last year. We also do the class contests and the only people I've heard complain are the teachers b/c they think they had more than some other class or b/c they turn in the wrong labels and we won't count them. Good luck.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

Hi! We have not done something like that and while I think in theory it is a great idea, I fear you may run into some problems.

We run a contest at our school for the classes that can turn in the most labels and I have spoken with some parents who feel bad that they cannot contribute to their kids class in this way as they say the simply do not buy anything that has box tops on them.

So I would fear that some kids might get excluded because they don't have the labels to hand in and of course that will make some parents upset.

If you do it a better idea might be to make the offer that you can either pay with 5 box tops or pay an admission fee. This way no one stands the chance of not being able to attend.

I have seen a couple ideas here and on the Boxtops web-site for using Boxtops as "currency". Like Family movie nights charging 5 baxtops as admission fee.

This seems like a great way to get people to turn in Boxtops and stop complaining that we are "nickel and diming them".

Have any of you done this? What was your program and was it successful?

Thanks for your input.
