? about tax-exempt certificate (501c)

There ae a couple of possibilities here.

First is the question: are you officially a 501(c)(3)? If so, at some point there would be a determination letter from the IRS saying so. That would suffice for your donor.

But there's no such thing as a "nonprofit tax id". Every company/organization has a TAX ID#. Then some of those get a letter of determination saying they're tax exempt. But you don't get a new number.

Typicaly -- if you are a 501c3 -- then a letter on your letter-head describing the/thanking for the contribution works. In the letter include the statement that you're organization is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) organization. And include your TAX ID # if the donor desires. If you have your letter of determination, no harm in showing him a copy. But he doesn't need a copy of that for his tax records.

A potential donor for our auction is requesting a "tax-exempt certificate (501c)".

Our auction committee has provided me a letter that they prepared which has our non-profit tax ID #. I tend to think that this is not enough. Is there an actual certificate from the IRS that we need called a tax-exempt certificate?
