I totally agree!! After two years of cutting and packing, I told the school no more. I do have a warning to all of you who still believe this is worthwhile - please wash your hands frequently while cutting and bundling. I and several of my helpers have gotten sick touching some of those labels that still have soup remains on them. In other words, someone opened the can, poured out the soup and then cut off the label (and probably just threw them in a plastic bag to save). If the label looks stained and smells, don't even bother trying to cut or bundle it. Save yourself a visit to the doctor!
With 2500 labels, you can receive.... a set of markers in a bucket.
Groups receive those markers in a bucket after promoting Campbell's all year in newsletters and announcements home (and often with a 4-foot tall Campbell's can in the school lobby!), dedicating a volunteer to sorting, cutting, bundling, tying (with white string, please!) packaging and shipping the labels, paying for shipping and waiting 6-8 weeks for delivery.
After years of talking about this, I'm convinced that the best way for parent groups to get out of the Campbell's rut is to go cold turkey -- don't mention it anymore in your communication vehicles, don't (please don't!) assign a volunteer to it, and commit to throwing away any labels that come in. If you've been running this program for a while, then you'll probably get labels funneling in for years. If so: smile, thank the donor profusely (and perhaps encourage the donor to help your group in other ways), and then quietly deposit the donated labels in the circular file.
Our School has not dropped the campbells labels yet. I totally agree though that the program is not worth while. Our school usually collects about 2500 labels a year. We are a school of about 425 students. I ran the program two years ago and the volunteer before me said too that it was not worth the time of cutting out the front of the labels and mailing them in.
We have about 5000 labels banked right now, but what do you get for all the work? NOT MUCH.
See if there is another school in your area that may still do the program and then you could donate your labels to them. I'm sure whomever you donate them to will greatly appreciate the efforts.
