Readathon or Bookathons?

I loved readathons when they had those feet marching through the halls with the names of students on them. When each student gets to a certain goal, they'd put up a foot with his/her name on it. Maybe you could color code the feet by class and have an ice cream party for the top class. For the smaller prize, it's just a kick to see your name by the front door.

At ours we gave each participant a pencil engraved with "At CIPLC We Love to Read" in the school colors. We had two drawings, one for PreK-2nd and then 3-5, that you were entered in when you completed the goal. The prizes were a bookbag with our school logo embroidered on the front and it was full of books, stationary stuff (pencils, erasers, stickers), a toy of some sort, and topped it off with a Scholastic Children's Dictionary.

Small prizes could be fancy pens or pencils, pencil cases, marker sets, book marks, reference sets, posters, or book bags.

It's hard to believe that just as the Spring fundraiser is coming together, I'm already making plans for the Fall Fundraiser! But I do not want to have to throw something together in August. I have been promoting a Readathon, and I thought I had the full support of the principal behind this, but she has been dropping hints in a very strong way towards doing a QSP sale. Which makes it that much more important that I have my ducks in a row and am ready when I go into the next Executive Committee meeting with her on April 1. I have a pretty good idea of what I'm putting together, but I would like some feedback from others that have done this type of event. Especially on the following topics...

Reading... I am thinking that we should track reading with K through 2nd grades by per book, and have talked to a 1st grade teacher that agrees. But for 3 through 5 I am thinking either per page or per minute of reading.

Prizes.... Obviously Top Reader. What about highest money earner? I woulk like to also have one or two "Goals" with small prizes for any child that reaches those goals. I have spoken to the Principal about having "Principal for the Day" as an award on some level. Ideas or suggestions for prizes on any level?

Any and all other suggestions would be appreciated!
