Our school district has been doing it since it's beginning. It's 10 years old this year.

Last year was the first time we did anything with this event. It was great, the particpation was huge and parents are asking for it again. In a nut shell here is what we did, Monday - sing-a-long; tuesday-stories w/teachers; Wednesday was gym/craft night; Thursday was bingo and Friday was game night. We charged $1 person per night (we used it to raise $'s for the Library also - get it no TV/Reading/Library [img]smile.gif[/img] ) We served cookies/pop in the middle (1hr) and if the kids came to 3 nights they got a $1.50 scholastic book if they came 5 nights they got a $3 book. The week long "event" is held the latter part of April. I still would love to hear more ideas from others who have promoted this campaign. I am thinking about spearheading it this year for our parent group.
The school sponsors a tv turn off week. I think a week in the Spring sometime is the national TV turn off week. I would have to look it up. Anyway if I remember right if the student watches no more then 4 hours of tv that week the parent fills out a form and the child returns it to school for a coupon for free Pizza Hut personal pan pizza certificate. I think this is a state wide program here in Maine. You might want to check if it's avaiable in your state. Last year we found out some of the schools in Maine planned
special events at school that week. One less evening to keep them away from the TV. Maybe a family game night and have board games on hand or a family math night, ice cream social, art night etc. I think we will try to plan one of our events during that week also.
