Wow! I'm glad I ran across your post. The staff and any parents who wish to help are planning 3 math nights for the school year. I think the first two will be instructional for the parents so that we can all better understand this math program we have called Everyday Math. The last night we are planning to hold a ice cream social with so this night would be great for the math games etc.

While our school has never sponsored a math night, I "spied" on another school last year that did do a math night. To begin with the kids made "estimations" at the beginning on how many rulers it would take to measure the distance from the front of the school to the gym, how many pencils it would take to reach the gym ceiling, how many baskets the PE teacher could make at basketball in a row etc. The kids put their guesses in different jars. The information was calculated and those who had the right answers entered a drawing for prizes at the end of the event. Each classroom was set up to play a different math game. There was math jeopardy, math bingo, baseball addition, donimoes, geometric shape making etc. At the end of all the stations everyone gathered in the gym to find out the winning estimation drawings. When everyone left each child was given a packet with paper bingo cards, cut out geometric shapes in ziploc baggies, paper dominoes, math game instructions, a deck of cards donated by a casino up north, dice and plastic bingo markers. These were the supplies to play the various games at home. Everyone had a great time. I would love to do this at our school, but alas I just don't have the energy it would take. I did however share all this information at our "principal roundtable meeting", and gave our principal a "math packet" too.

Our PTO is trying to get together a math night for the kids and their families. Does anybody have any ideas on where I can get good info on different math games for kids K-6? What are some things that really go over great??
