school garden project

Our art teacher worked with some of the older kids to make mosaic stepping stones for our courtyard.

One thing I would advise is that be sure you have some plan to maintain the landscaping once it's completed. We have done several gardens/landscaping projects; but if nobody waters or weeds (especially in the summer), a lot of effort will have been wasted.

We just started talking about starting a little veggie garden for our younger children to work on. So I would like to know if anyone has tried that idea. We are K-8.

But as far as the courtyard, just two week ago we (the PTO and the Board of Ed each gave $500 and the Teachers Assoc. gave $300). We pooled that money. Two of our parents are landscapers, they bought all the shrubs and mulch then along with several volunteers including the principal, some of the more involved teachers and several parents proceeded to landscape on a Sunday morning. The result was fabulous! And the cost was minimal.

I would start with collecting from various school organizations and local nurseries for the money and shrubery/plants and then look for volunteers.

hey guys, has anyone ever done this? We have a parent who would love to turn our boring courtyards into nice attractive gardens. The art teacher and the student council want to help as well, the principal is fine with it.... My question is I guess if you have done it do you have suggestions for what worked, what didn't, etc? thanks, maggie
