I just wanted to let you know that our 1980s Family Dance night was a huge success. Thanks for all of your suggestions and ideas. Our PE teacher and Music teacher taught the kids all sorts of dances for the two weeks prior, and we informed the DJ which ones. The kids and parents had a great time and the place was packed. I would say half the teachers showed up for this event which really touched me. We sold all of the photos, pizza and pop. I wish I had more glow in the dark necklaces because they sold out half way through.(I ordered 150.) Everyone had a great time and we made a little bit of money as well. I am pleased. Ask the classes to make decorations. You could assign a specific decoration to go with your theme.

The children will do a great job and they will see their artwork at the dance

Return everything to the teachers.

and have some volunteers some in and help decorate

Good luck and have fun!

Now my next question is how would you decorate for this dance? I want to keep it simple and not spend alot of money or man (woman) hours on this. I am not very creative, so HELP! P.S. I plan on selling pop, pizza, glow in the dark necklaces, and polaroid pictures with an 80's theme background (one of our creative teachers is doing the background for me.) Hallaluiah!

I saw on a recent post the idea of selling glow in the dark necklaces. I think this is a super idea, and plan on looking in the Oriental Trading catalog for them. Thanks for everyone's tips.

The school (K-8) that my kids are leaving this year has a daddy-daughter and a mother-son event - this year it was dances for both. The daddy daugher was western and the mother-son was patriotic in theme. If you do a theme you can sell something that goes with the theme - inexpensive cowboy hats from Oriental Trading or the like. While we charge $12.00 per "couple" and $5.00 for each additional attendee (if daddy has 2 daughters) everything is included - snacks and all - along with a photo of the attendees. If you prefer to not charge admission - you could charge for the photos and get cutesy frames to go along with the theme. Good luck! Sounds like your heart is in the right place.

One thing you should do is go to your local businesses and ask for donations. Many chain fast food places will donate. Do you have Sonic? Our donated 500 hot dogs and buns! Remind them its tax-deductible. Give them a copy of your tax id, etc. Go to other businesses and ask for donations of prizes. Such as hair cutters, car/oil changes, restaurants. They will offer gift cards! You just have to ask. Even your grocery store chains will give you money. Try Walmart. They have been very generous with us. Ask your local car dealership to borrow their helium machine for balloons!!
Good luck--it sounds like alot of fun.
